How to Keep Your Spices Fresh
Tips for storing Spices:
- Ground spices, seasoning blends and dried herbs do not spoil, but they do lose their potency over time. When stored properly in an airtight container, spices and herbs usually last approximately 1-3 years.
- Always replace seal on storage container immediately after use.
- Because sunlight can cause the color and potency of spices to fade, store them in a cool, dry place (kitchen cabinet, pantry, or drawer) away from a window or sunlight.
- Because humidity can cause clumping, avoid storing spices and herbs near a humid area (dishwasher, stovetop, microwave, or coffee maker).
- To further avoid clumping, do not use a wet spoon when scooping spices, seasoning blends or herbs from a storage container. Also, avoid sprinkling spices directly into a steaming pot.
- Spices and seasoning blends in the red pepper family (paprika and chili powder) should be refrigerated to help retain their color and guard against infestation.
