Earl Tupper, inventor and entrepreneur, had a goal to provide the consumer with a quality plastic product. He developed a way to purify black polyethylene slag, a waste product of oil refinement, into a substance that was flexible, tough, non-porous, non-greasy and translucent. He then developed the Tupper seal, a virtually airtight, watertight "seal," based on a typical paint can lid turned upside down. These were tremendous developments for the food storage market. Tupperware products were introduced to the American consumer in a range of bright colors and state-of-the-art designs. They were featured in a 1947 House Beautiful magazine with the title, "Fine Art for 39¢" and won various design awards, but this incredibly innovative product did poorly on the retail sales shelf. The idea of clean, flexible, sealable plastic was such a foreign concept that consumers couldn't figure out how to use the seal. In the late 1940s, a woman named Brownie Wise came to realize what the consumer required. Brownie, a single mother with no formal sales training, began selling Tupperware products through home partiesexplaining the seal and how to use itwith huge success! Earl put Brownie in charge of developing a home party sales force, and Tupperware parties became a cultural phenomenon. Tupperware's success stems from the combined genius of Earl Tupper and Brownie Wise. The home party plan became and remains the core of our Tupperware business. Brownie, the consummate saleswoman and motivator, personified respect for the sales force, stating: "If we build the people, they'll build the business." Over fifty years later, this legacy remains the most important part of Tupperware's continuing success. The Tupperware
